<p>Die Wichtigkeit der Begleitung von Kindern und Jugendlichen durch die vielfältige Welt von Social Media in Zeiten von Krisen, problematischen und einseitiger Bubbles auf Plattformen, Gewaltcontent und vieles mehr  hat die Stadt Linz schon längst erkannt!</p>
<p>Erwachsene sind oft ratlos und Wissen gar nicht, wo sie bei der Begleitung von Kindern und Jugendlichen durch die Welt von Social Media ansetzen sollen, ohne in die Privatsphäre der Kinder zu verletzen. Kein Hinderniss für die cyberchecker – wir stellen uns diesen herausfordernden Fragen von Lehrpersonal, Erziehungsberechtigten und Interessierten.</p>
<p>Der Ansatz eines digitalen Elternabends ist innovativ und verlief durch die Chatfunktion und die wunderbare Ausstattung problemlos. Die digitale Welt bietet viele Chancen.</p>

In this blog post, we will explain some important terms and give tips on how you can help your children navigate the online world in a safe and healthy way.</p>
<h2><strong>Cybersecurity</strong></h2>
<p>Cybersecurity is an important topic that concerns parents and children alike. It refers to measures and technologies developed to protect computer networks, systems, devices and data from cyber-attacks, unauthorised access, data theft and other threats. It is important that children learn early on how to stay safe online by using strong passwords, not disclosing personal information and being careful with suspicious links and messages.</p>
<h2><strong>Fake news</strong></h2>
<p>Fake news is false or misleading information that is deliberately spread in order to influence opinions, create a mood or spread disinformation. It can quickly go viral on social media platforms and lead to misunderstandings, confusion and conflict. It is important that children learn to be critical of the information they see online and to check sources before believing them.</p>
<h2><strong>FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)</strong></h2>
<p>FOMO refers to the fear of missing out that can arise from the constant consumption of social media, when you feel like you're not participating in current events or keeping up with the latest happenings. It is important that children learn to develop a healthy approach to social media and not be influenced by the pressure to always be online.</p>
<h2><strong>Doxing</strong></h2>
<p>Doxing is the practice of collecting and publishing personal information about a person online, often with the aim of harassing, threatening or discrediting them. Parents should educate their children about what personal information they can share online and what should be kept private.</p>
<h2><strong>Cyberbullying</strong></h2>
<p>Cyberbullying is a serious problem that affects many children and young people. It refers to the use of technology, particularly social media, to deliberately harass, threaten or humiliate other people. Parents should talk to their children about cyberbullying and encourage them to seek help if they are victimised or witness someone else doing it.</p>
<h2><strong>Cybersecurity</strong></h2>
<p>Cybersecurity is another important aspect of the digital world that affects parents and children alike. It encompasses the practices, technologies and processes aimed at protecting computer systems, networks and data from unauthorised access, misuse, theft or damage. Parents should ensure that their children's devices are equipped with the latest security updates and that they use strong passwords to protect their data.</p>
<h2><strong>Data protection</strong></h2>
<p>Data protection is another important topic in connection with the use of social media and other online platforms. It refers to the security and protection of personal data from unauthorised access, misuse or disclosure. Parents should teach their children how to protect their privacy online by reviewing their privacy settings and only sharing information with trusted individuals.</p>
<h2><strong>Two-factor authentication</strong></h2>
<p>Two-factor authentication is a security procedure in which access to an account or platform is verified by entering two different identification methods to increase security against unauthorised access. Parents should teach their children how to enable two-factor authentication to further protect their accounts.</p>
<h2><strong>Phishing</strong></h2>
<p>Phishing refers to fraudulent attempts to steal sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card information through fake communications, often through fake emails or websites. Children should learn how to recognise and protect themselves from phishing attempts by not giving out personal information or clicking on suspicious links.</p>

<p>Fake news is misleading or false information that is deliberately spread to manipulate or deceive public opinion. Children should learn how to recognise fake news and rely on trustworthy sources for their information.</p>
<h2><strong>Sexting</strong></h2>
<p>Sexting is the sending or receiving of sexually explicit messages, photos or videos via digital communication tools such as smartphones or social media. Parents should talk to their children about the risks of sexting and teach them how to protect themselves in such situations by not sharing intimate content and treating others with respect.</p>
<h2><strong>Cyber grooming</strong></h2>
<p>Cyber grooming refers to the manipulation and targeted approach of children or young people via the internet, often with the aim of enabling sexual abuse or exploitation. Parents should talk to their children about how they can protect themselves from cyber grooming by not disclosing personal information and not socialising with strangers online.</p>
<h2><strong>Bubble</strong></h2>
<p>Bubble refers to the tendency of social media users to stay in a filter bubble-like environment where they are mainly exposed to content and opinions that match their own views, which can lead to limited diversity and perspective. Children should learn how to step out of their bubble and learn about different perspectives in order to develop a broader understanding of the world.</p>
<h2><strong>Algorithm</strong></h2>
<p>An algorithm is a set of instructions or rules used by computer programs to perform certain tasks, such as displaying content in the news feeds of social media platforms, based on user interests and behaviour. Children should understand how algorithms work and how they can influence their online experiences.</p>
<h2><strong>Grooming</strong></h2>
<p>Grooming is the process by which an adult forms an emotional connection with a child in order to later abuse them, often through online communication and advances. Parents should talk to their children about the risks of grooming and teach them how to recognise and protect themselves from suspicious behaviour.</p>
<h2><strong>Social media disorder scale</strong></h2>
<p>The Social Media Disorder Scale is a tool to assess and measure the level of dependency or negative impact that excessive social media use can have on mental wellbeing. Parents should be mindful of how much time their children spend online and ensure that they have a healthy balance between online and offline activities.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On Thursday, 9 November 2023, the cybercheckers travelled to Linz for the Interpädagogica to give a presentation on a topic close to their hearts: <strong>Through the world of TikTok and Co.</strong></p>
<p>Interpädagogica is a major education trade fair, which this year also focuses on digitalisation and digital schools. So cyberchecker was invited to give a presentation on the world of TikTok and co. and the importance of this for children and young people and everyday school life. The questions that the committed educators and educational designers had were particularly interesting. In addition, new trends in the world of social media were passed on to the educators. An exciting discourse also arose, which, to the delight of the cybercheckers, showed that teachers also recognise the importance of this topic in schools and want to make a contribution. Our visit to Interpädagogica enabled us to take away ideas, concerns, but also uncertainties in relation to everyday school life and social media. In order to create awareness throughout society, this is exactly what we need: committed and interested adults who want to know and understand the digital world of children and young people.</p>

<h2>False reality about one's own sexuality</h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When cyberchecker surveyed 150 children and young people between the ages of 10 and 15 in Vienna and Vorarlberg, 122 children stated that they had already received requests or messages from adults. Some of the children were also asked to send pictures of themselves. Some children said that they were having fun and had communicated with adults via various platforms. Especially </span><b>Snapchat, Instagram</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and </span><b>Whats App</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are popular platforms for getting in touch with children.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In a safe environment created by the teacher and cyberchecker, an 11-year-old boy said that he had recently taken part in a live stream in which an adult man had performed sexual acts on himself. According to his story, he perceived this situation as </span><b>exciting and funny</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and watched the stream for a few minutes.&nbsp;</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Other children also opened up and said that they would secretly watch adult sexual content. In addition to accessible porn sites, Reddit also appears to be a popular platform for this. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These pictures and videos ensure that the children have a completely <strong>False reality about your own sexuality</strong> and their own body. They often feel overwhelmed by these images, but curiosity and their own sense of pleasure can lead them to consume such content more often. The connection to love, respect and healthy sexuality can be lost. <strong>There is also a risk that the children will make a connection with strangers</strong>that they do not know. This can lead to the sending of personal photos and personal messages and data. In the worst case scenario, the children can build up such a strong connection that they wish they could meet the stranger.&nbsp;</span></p>

<h2>Pornographic content - tips from sex educators</h2>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>Start early and educate:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> As soon as the child has a mobile phone with internet access and is allowed to use it without adult supervision, you should start talking about sexuality and pornography on the internet. Children are often afraid of doing something forbidden or bad when they receive such messages or see certain posts. Make children aware that they can accidentally end up on such sites or in such chats and that this is not a bad thing. In this way, you as a parent or teacher can create an important basis of trust that is not about guilt and shame. </span>It is important that you go to an adult you trust and report and block such content or messages.</li>

Our children are confronted with adult content that they are often unable to fully understand and process.</p>

							<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Demo Day finally arrived, where we presented our favourite project, cyberchecker, and were actually chosen as one of the three winning projects. </span><b>This means that we will receive a grant of 15,000 euros, which we can invest specifically in the further development of our project.</b></p><p><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 2rem;">Start of the journey</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It feels like just yesterday when we presented our idea to the <a href="https://www.futurewings-challenge.at/">Future Wings Challenge</a> applied. </span><b>Our journey and the four-month intensive programme began with the news that we had been accepted into the funding programme.</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> We had the privilege of taking part in informative workshops with experts from various sectors. We also had a dedicated mentor at our side during this time, who supported us with valuable tips and advice. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">During the programme, we worked hard to get from the idea to the actual product. In the beginning, we weren't sure how we could reach the children and who exactly our target groups should be. </span><b>But after numerous workshops, intensive work and careful consideration, we were certain: we don't want to exclude anyone, because social media affects us all! </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our clear goal is therefore to create awareness of social media throughout society. Our </span><b>First tool</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> are interactive workshops that teachers and other multipliers can integrate directly and independently of us into their lessons with little effort. </span><b>These workshops are closely linked to the curriculum and the children's prior knowledge. </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">We use a flexible modular system in which the individual contents are separated from each other and can therefore be adapted to the needs of each individual classroom. This enables differentiation and a variety of methods. </span><b>The successful implementation of our workshop by seven teachers and 152 pupils aged 10-14 in schools in Vorarlberg and Vienna, independently of us, confirms the multiplication capability of our approach.</b></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In order to better understand the needs and interests of children, we conducted a survey with over 200 pupils in Vienna, Vorarlberg and Tyrol. Based on the results, we have developed our first topic, </span><b>"Social media and the brain - why am I so addicted to TikTok?"</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">The project was developed and piloted as part of the Future Wings Challenge.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Our </span><b>Second tool</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is our website, which serves as a central point of contact. Teachers can download the so-called workshops on various topics here free of charge. </span><b>Parents are supported with information on current topics and trends and have access to our multilingual guide.</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> It is particularly important to us that nobody is excluded and that everyone can benefit from cyberchecker. In view of our own multicultural backgrounds, we have set ourselves the goal of translating the contents of the guide into at least seven languages. We have already translated the first topic of the guide into English, BKS and French, with other languages still in progress.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As </span><b>third tool</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> we offer low-threshold support on social media. </span><b>There, children not only receive content for the workshops, but also further tips for a healthy approach to the online world. </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">This enables us to reach those children who are not at the target schools.</span></p><h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">The profit</span></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With the </span><b>We will invest the funding we receive in the production of videos to create cool, colourful and exciting content for our workshops. </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">We will also continue to develop our website so that it is easy to use and is always updated with the latest articles. We are also planning to work closely with experts for our nine additional workshops to ensure that our content is scientifically sound.
