In this video, we want to explain why social media is so fascinating for us and how it affects our brains. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are designed to captivate us and make us spend as much time as possible on their platforms. And we do - several hours a day on average. But why? It all has to do with a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Dopamine is released when we do something that makes us feel good, such as eating a delicious meal or receiving a compliment. When we use social media, we are often rewarded: through likes, comments and messages. These rewards trigger a release of dopamine and that feels good. However, the constant release of dopamine can also lead to addiction. We become addicted to getting more and more likes and comments and spend more and more time on the platforms to get these rewards. This can lead to problematic consumer behaviour and also affect our mental health. It is therefore important that we realise how social media affects our brains and how we can protect ourselves. We should set ourselves clear rules about how much time we spend on the platforms and when we use them. We should also try to focus on other activities that make us feel good, such as sports, reading or listening to music.
